This time it’s a different Maui beach.

For the Chernenko’s beach portrait, we chose Baldwin Beach.

Rather than stating the obvious, here are a few things the people don’t tend to think about when choosing a location for photos.

  1. Access: Make sure there is good access and parking.  Ya it’s not the “sexiest” part of it, bu there needs to be parking and good walking access (especially if there is a wheelchair involved).
  2. Room: Crowded beaches are popular because for many reasons.  But they are still crowded. For family photos, you want to be able to move around and get to places where there aren’t people getting into the background of your pictures. Big beaches tend to be better.
  3. Wind: Generally speaking, there is less wind (and people) earlier in the morning. But it still helps to scout out the location ahead of time and check the weather forecast.
  4. Angle: Angles are key.  When your beach location is at the correct angle relative to the sun, the water will be bluer. the angle can also affect the wind.  If the wind is flowing toward the background (the ocean), then it is in your favor.  If it is coming from the background, it will be very difficult to have “good hair.” Pro Tip: remember the the angle of the sun changes throughout the year. This is a great resource for planning: https://photoephemeris.com/
  5. Polarizer: A circular polarizer is one of the biggest bang for the buck tools that you can use to make your backgrounds better. This is double tru for Maui beach photography. Ok this was not “location” tip, but it is so helpful it s worth mentioning since we were on the subject of angles

Well back to the portraits.

Baldwin Beach on Maui checks all these boxes in addition to having stunning visual features. The bright color of the sand looks spectacular with the beautiful blue ocean (thanks to the angle, of course). On one side of the beach there are palm trees and other side there are the West Maui Mountains. All of this makes a wonderful canvas for a Maui photographer to create a magnificent beach portrait.
