They Left the Kids at Home

For their 10th anniversary, John and Sarina treated themselves to a week at the Hyatt Regency Maui. They left their two young boys at home for this trip. That left them time (and money) to do romantic dinners, luxurious massages and, well, beach portraits. It was another perfect day and they chose the 9am slot. in 15 minutes they had over 30 unique images to choose from. They smiled and laughed pretty much the whole time. They enjoyed the shoot as much as they were enjoying their much needed break. The shoot started over by the white swans on

Beach Portrait Style Part 1

A quick search on beach portrait photography will reveal a seemingly unending number of different styles of photography. Photographer galleries will be all over the place. Today we are going to take some of the confusion out of it all. While everyone has their own “look,” photography styles can be broken down into few key components. The two main categories are lighting and posing. In part one, we will cover lighting. Part two will cover posing. Lighting: Natural Light and Supplemental Light Let’s start with natural light: There’s a meme going around that goes something like this: Saying: “I’m

Taking a family portrait at sunset can be a fun and beautiful experience. Here are some tips to help you solve this and create a stunning portrait at sunset. Honeymoon on a Maui Beach

It was the morning after the Davidsons' beautiful beachside wedding, and they were excited to start their honeymoon. They had planned a morning beach portrait session to capture the beauty and romance of the moment, and they couldn't wait to get started. As they walked down the sandy path to the beach, hand in hand, they were filled with a sense of excitement and happiness. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a bright glow over the water. When the portrait session was over, the Davidsons couldn't wait to see the results. They were thrilled

Adding a Little Action To a Family Portrait Session on Maui

The morning of the Maui family portrait session was filled with excitement and nerves. The Thompson family had been planning this trip for months, and they were determined to get the perfect family photo to hang on their living room wall. Early on Rachel (Mom) couldn't help but worry about everything that could go wrong. She had two rambunctious children and a husband who was notorious for making silly faces in pictures. She just hoped that the photographer would be able to capture some natural, candid shots of them all having fun together. When they arrived at the beach,

Is It Crazy to Do Family Portraits on a Rainy on Maui?

We're not gonna let a little rain stop us, are we?  The Doan family decided to stick with their original schedule.  On an off rain was in the forecast (and during the shoot).  We were able to take cover when necessary and ended up getting some great shots.  The four of them, the two of them and then just kids. Leaning more toward natural light helped the photographer reduce the appearance of raindrops (both in the air and on clothes).  Careful use of flash is a great way to increase the dynamic range of portraits, but it will also

The Session: Poses

There are 3 things that we all do on the beach in Hawaii.  We stand, walk and sit.    Simple variations on these three themes make the most natural looking   portraits.  Being creative with posing people is a big part of the value of a   photographer.  Though it happens all too often with the average photographer,  you can't just “wing it”.  Most people are not professionals in front of the   camera, so the photographer has to know how to make you look good and how to give   you variety to choose from. Just shooting a bunch of “candids” can

The Session

Some photographers pride themselves on providing an hour or even 90   minutes for a standard portraits session.  Most people (especially kids) are   tired of smiling and posing after 30 minutes on a Hawaiian beach.  I think it is important to allow   an hour, but a professional photographer should focus on getting the shots and   not on using up an hour.
